Distilled Water for Humidifiers, Steam Irons & Garment Steamers: Stop the White Dust
The white dust around your humidifier and the brown spits from your steam iron are the same thing: your tap water's minerals, relocated. Every steam appliance manual says the same two words — distilled water — and in Malaysia and Singapore's humid climate, where humidifiers and steamers work hard, the volumes add up faster than most households expect.
What does tap water do to each appliance?

Is "drinking water" or filtered water good enough?
No — filtration is not demineralisation. Carbon filters improve taste but leave minerals untouched; even RO water carries 10–50 ppm of dissolved solids, which still accumulates in a nightly-use appliance. Appliance manuals specify distilled (or demineralised) water because it measures 0–3 ppm — effectively nothing to deposit. The differences are covered in our distilled vs RO comparison.
The household maths
A steam-heavy household uses 25–35 litres of distilled water a month. At Malaysian bottle prices (RM2–RM4/litre) that's RM600–RM1,600 a year — for water. Why does my humidifier leave white dust everywhere?
Ultrasonic humidifiers atomise everything in the tank — including dissolved minerals. Those minerals leave the mist as microscopic particles and settle on furniture as fine white dust. Distilled water contains no minerals, so there is nothing to become dust.
Why does my steam iron spit brown water?
Minerals from tap water bake onto the soleplate's internal chamber as scale. Flakes of that scale eventually break loose, mix with steam, and spit out as brown spots — usually onto a white shirt. Iron manufacturers recommend distilled or demineralised water for exactly this reason.
How much distilled water do steam appliances use monthly?
A nightly-use ultrasonic humidifier uses roughly 6–10 litres a month; a household steam iron 2–4 litres; a garment steamer 4–8 litres. A household running all three plus a CPAP machine can easily use 25–35 litres of distilled water monthly.
